Celebration of Father Gene Szarek’s 15th year as Alpha Chapter Moderator
By Pat Coogan, Alpha

On May 21, 2010, the Windy City Alumni Association hosted its second annual Alumni Banquet in celebration of Father Gene Szarek’s 15th year as Alpha Chapter Moderator. More than 50 Alpha alumni and many of their wives and girlfriends turned out to the Rosewood Restaurant in Rosemont, IL to honor Father Szarek for his outstanding commitment and guidance over the years.

"I had heard about Father Szarek through many students over the years, and about how his Writing Intensive Christian Marriage class basically baited lines that snaked out the door," WCAA President Charlie Johnson said about when he initially decided to approach Father Szarek in 1995. "He sat across the desk from us, clad in a Hawaiian shirt and smoking his pipe, just as he would do many other times in my presence. After leaving the meeting, we knew Father Szarek was the right choice for us."

Fifteen years later, Father Szarek is still a rock of support for both active and graduated brothers. His influence extends beyond Alpha Delta Gamma, as he has presided over numerous brothers’ personal functions such as

weddings, baptisms, funerals and anything in between. He has also been honored by the National Council three times as Moderator of the Year in 1999, 2003 and 2004.

The Banquet is a new tradition for the WCAA. Last year’s honoree was Kevin Clarke (Fall 1969), whose commitments to the chapter over the years include organization of the original Alpha Alumni Golf Outing, now thriving in its 12th consecutive year. While honoring the service of one of our brothers, the event also serves as a fundraiser to help with the costs of maintaining the Alpha Chapter House.
